asking for some info - making coins
Me and a friend are thinking of doing a few coins as gift certificates for our local businesses... we're just tossing the idea around, but I know there are people here who can answer a few questions...
We were thinking of ordering our first batch, and perhaps upgrading to a drop hammer press if things got good... but who can I contact to order curstom "coins" anyone have any recommendations? Also, the template, or design, I know theres a way for people to make custom coins (GIM has liberty rounds, right?), who would I contact to get a plate made? I know the template would cost quite a bit to get done... approx 5000$?? |

Re: asking for some info - making coins
A good jeweler who has CAD/CAM capabilities can produce an original wax and take a mold allowing you to produce the coins in very small amounts. Granted the crispness will not be that of a stamping and the background shine will not be quite as uniform but depending on your expectations and desired use, this could be a viable alternative.
If you go to a jeweler to discuss this idea ask specifically to see the CAD program and the CAM equipment. Many jewelers claim to have the capability but actually job out this type of work. You will want to deal with the person actually programing the design, not a middle man. In house casting of the coins is not as important as the in house design. |

Our gun club does NOT give platinum awards BTW. If I'm not mistaken, Silvertowne made the GIM rounds. I hear you could get NWTM to do it too but I'm not sure I would do that. |

Also check out http://www.nwtmintbullion.com/ perhaps for price comparisons.
I sold them old gold chains and silverware (traded for 100 oz. silver) last year. Their work is amazing and so are the people that work there. They create medals for the Navy @ Bangor, Bremerton, & Naval Undersea Warfare Center ... all near Seattle. I'm sure you could do it over the phone/internet whevever you live .. |

Re: asking for some info - making coins
checked out coinable.com. however their coins seem to be goldsilver plated... i'd need coins with either some type of alloy (50% silver, 90% silver) or 99.99...
NWT doesnt seem to popular... |

or coinable. I think Silvertown may be a touch cheaper. Interested to see what other places show up. :) |
Re: asking for some info - making coins
Check this guy's site out: www.shirepost.com
He makes small quantities of "fantasy coins" and works in many different metals, and uses antique presses. I don't know whether he'd be interested in doing commercial work, though. It wouldn't hurt to give him a call. |
Re: asking for some info - making coins
I hear rumors that NWTM is working on an "End of Time as We Know It" commemorative coin to be dated 2012.
Expected release date is August of 2024 ! |

Re: asking for some info - making coins
Thank you all for your great feedback - I do have another question - we are talking to a local artist for the coin design, and I need to know exactly how one goes about doing the "plate" for the coin...
Do i simply call one of those custom coins companies and email them an image ? Does the palte have to be custom made (fixed cost for every coin design?) |
